Stone Breaker

Scientific name: Pillantus ninuri, esp. chanca piedra. tagalog Sampa-sampalukan

This small herb weed along road sides and as a garden grass may look like an ordinary grass that we seldom notice. I never had any idea what this plant could do to affect my health. I heard that it was used as a folkloric medicinal bath for infants here in the Philippines, I don't know what these babies could benefit from it.
It was 2003 when I felt this excruciating pain in my upper abdomen, so painful that I cannot get up and I cant find any comfortable position lying in bed. For days It kept me awake, the pain is horrifying. I was diagnosed to have gall stones and needed surgery immediately. In a months time , It was taken out of me. I was relieved , and the pain was gone. But the memory of the operation still visible , a big scar at the right side of my tummy.
Recently, I had an attack similar to what I felt before, radiating pain from my upper abdomen to my back. I found it is very hard to sleep and ignore the pain, at first I took paracetamol hoping to relieve my discomfort. It never did, maybe a little less painful but not relieving enough to sleep. I read an article before about this little weed that can be a potent pain reliever, the Philantus Ninuri, or what south americans call Chanca Piedra(stone breaker). We have it here in the Phippines, we call it Sampa-sampalukan (tamarind-like) it looks like tamarind leaves but the difference between these leaves are, tamarind doesn't bear seeds at the back of its leave branches.


So I tried to make a concoction, and drink it. In a matter of a few minutes, the pain slowly diminished. But still I felt some heaviness, as when I inhale deeply, there's something or a little discomfort when i fill my lungs with air.I made some research browsing the net for something that which I can relate to my symptoms. First I had a tummy ache, so it maybe spasmodic. I had a history of gastritis when I was a teenager, but It ruled out because, I realized its nothing compared to my experience of the severity of pain and symptoms. Then I suspected of recurring gall stones inspite of my missing gallblader, or is there some bile sac remained in my body?
All that I can do is hope for the best or better alternative, In this times of crisis(economic)which I guess all the parts of the world is experiencing, having a good health care system is very costly. I for one cannot afford to pay for another operation or procedure. Its just too much expensive.
Thats why I turned my eye on another health promoting herbal solution. The plant has long been used in Brazil and Peru as an herbal remedy for Kidney stones. Research among sufferers of Kidney stones has shown that, while intake of Phyllanthus niruri didn't lead to a significant difference in either stone voiding or pain levels, it may reduce urinary calcium, a contributing factor to stone growth. In addition, one study conducted on rats showed that an aqueous solution of Phyllanthus niruri may inhibit kidney stone growth and formation in animals who already have stones.
